About the Award

The Bryon and Gwen Johnson Immunobiology Scholarship was established to support graduate students enrolled in the Immunobiology Interdepartmental Graduate Program within Iowa State University. This scholarship reflects the Johnsons’ commitment to advancing education and research in immunobiology by providing meaningful financial support to students pursuing graduate training in this interdisciplinary field. 

Purpose and Impact

The scholarship is intended to recognize and support academic excellence among graduate students in immunobiology. By easing financial burdens, the award helps students focus on their scholarly and research endeavors while contributing to the continued strength and innovation of the program. 

Eligibility and Selection

  • Applicants must be graduate students enrolled in the Immunobiology Interdepartmental Graduate Program. 
  • Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic merit. 
  • Awards are made for one academic year and may be renewed at the discretion of the program, provided eligibility criteria continue to be met. 

Selection Criteria

Applicants for the Bryon and Gwen Johnson Immunobiology Scholarship will be evaluated holistically based on the following categories:

  • Academic Performance (Grades) - Demonstrated academic achievement in graduate‑level coursework.
  • Quality of Personal Statement - Clarity of research goals, quality of scholarship, and reflection on engagement within the Immunobiology Interdepartmental Graduate Program.
  • Research Productivity - Evidence of research progress and productivity appropriate to the applicant’s stage in the program (e.g., publications, presentations, ongoing projects).
  • Letter of Recommendation from Major Professor - Assessment of the applicant’s academic performance, research contributions, and professional development.
  • Level of Participation in the Program - Engagement in program activities such as seminars, outreach, or service contributions.
  • Status of Preliminary Examination - Consideration of the applicant’s progress toward degree milestones.
