Academics
Welcome, future immunobiologists!
The Interdepartmental Immunobiology (IMBIO) graduate program offers a flexible and interdisciplinary education, drawing from over a dozen departments across the university. Our students are trained to address grand challenges in health and disease, including those related to infectious diseases, vaccine development, cancer immunotherapy, and autoimmune disorders.
This program emphasizes both foundational immunological research and translational applications, with projects spanning host-pathogen interactions, immune regulation, molecular diagnostics, and therapeutic development. The structure allows students to tailor their education to their interests while benefiting from top-tier faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and a collaborative research environment that prepares them to make a global impact.

A minor is available for students majoring in a different program. Graduate students wishing to seek a minor in Immunobiology are encouraged to contact the IMBIO Interdepartmental Graduate Program Coordinator for further information. Inquiries can be submitted to charris@iastate.edu
Concurrent DVM/Immunobiology Graduate Studies
The Immunobiology Graduate Program at Iowa State University encourages applications from graduates of DVM, MD, and other professional programs. In most cases a sequential completion of professional – graduate school programs is recommended. In special circumstances the Immunobiology Graduate Program may consider applications for concurrent DVM/Immunobiology graduate studies. For DVM students applying to Immunobiology, a plan should be submitted with the application materials that details how the graduate and professional programs will be integrated. This needs to include when course work and research will be scheduled. This letter should also provide an estimate of when the preliminary and final exams would be taken. As there is no significant overlap between the Immunobiology and DVM curricula, no decrease in time to graduate degree is expected by combining programs. The proposed major advisor will need to supply a letter of support that indicates how the student’s stipend, benefits, and tuition will be covered following completion of the DVM degree. In addition to approval by the Immunobiology Admissions Committee, all combined DVM/graduate student requests must be approved by the College of Veterinary Medicine Associate Deans of Research and Academic Affairs. Request forms for concurrent DVM/Graduate programs can be found on the Graduate College Student Forms webpage.
General Curriculum Information
The immunobiology program emphasizes interdisciplinary education with specialization appropriate to the student's interests. The master's degree requires 30 credit hours, and the doctoral degree requires 72 credit hours. The Graduate College requires that PhD candidates pass preliminary examinations. A master's degree is not a prerequisite for a PhD. Research is an integral part of the curriculum in Immunobiology at Iowa State University. A student will select a major professor from the faculty participating in the program. The role of the major professor is to act as a mentor and will guide the student's professional development. Both MS and PhD candidates must prepare and defend a thesis.
